Highway Laborer/Driver

Position Purpose

In support of the Town of Great Barrington’s mission to serve the community with integrity, accountability, and excellence in public service, the Highway Driver/Laborer plays a critical role in maintaining safe, reliable, and resilient public infrastructure. This position is responsible for the safe operation of CDL vehicles and for performing a wide range of skilled and manual tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of Town roads, drainage systems, and public ways. The Laborer/Driver directly contributes to public safety, environmental protection, and community wellbeing through stormwater management, roadway improvements, emergency response, and seasonal operations such as snow and ice control.

Working as part of the Highway Division, this role requires reliability, teamwork, and a strong commitment to service. The work performed has a visible and lasting impact on residents, businesses, and visitors, and supports the Town’s goal of maintaining accessible, safe, and well maintained public spaces for all.

Supervision 

Reports to: Highway/Facilities Superintendent, Working Foreman, and/or DPW Superintendent

Supervises: No direct supervisory responsibilities

Works independently or as part of a crew to complete assigned tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates trucks for hauling, loading, and transporting materials.
  • Performs manual labor in connection with road maintenance, drainage work, pavement repair, sidewalk repair, and general construction.
  • Assists with the installation, repair, and maintenance of storm drains, catch basins, culverts, and other drainage infrastructure.
  • Participates in snow and ice removal, including plowing, sanding, and salting.
  • Performs routine maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment; reports needed repairs.
  • Maintains work areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Responds to emergency situations such as storms, flooding, or road hazards.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement required.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of trucks, equipment, and tools.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work cooperatively, and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements 

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, and traffic hazards.
  • Operates a variety of motor vehicles, and power tools.
  • Interacts with the public on occasion, requiring courtesy and professionalism.
